As we enter hurricane season and take time to prepare, take a few minutes to evaluate the most crucial part of keeping your home and valuables safe and dry: your roof.

The roof on your home or business plays a vital role in protecting you and the contents of your home during an impending storm, so here a few things to take into consideration for before, and after, a storm heads our way.

Begin by taking a quick look over your roof and locating anything that could be a potential hazard with a storm on the horizon. A few items to look for: broken/missing/sliding shingles, overhanging tree limbs, shingles ‘curling’, or metal roofing screws that are backing out. If you find any of these, contact a certified licensed contractor to address these repairs accordingly.

In November of 2019, the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation reports that there were more than 1,400 insurance claims filed in Wakulla County because of damages caused by Hurricane Michael. This tells us that storm damage is not limited to direct landfall locations, and to be familiar with your insurance policy with the possible financial obligations you could encounter after a storm.

Should your roof receive any damage as the result of a storm, it is important to have the damaged area covered immediately. Leaving a damaged roof open can allow for leaks from future rainstorms which, if not addressed, can damage the roof decking and structural components below.

Then, when taking into consideration the installation of a new roof, consider all the factors that go into the selection process. For example, Logan Roofing prefers to install a line of shingles that have been tested to withstand 130 mph winds. No matter the direction you decide to take, be sure your roofing contractor is properly licensed, insured, and can offer you the appropriate warranties for their product.
